11.3 MT of eWaste was shipped September 22.

Comments - we are now almost 12 MT behind last year. The co-mingled materials coming from homes is still up almost 8 MT. Newsprint is down almost 4 MT, Cardboard is down by 9.5, glass; 2 and books by almost 4 MT.

A couple of other things may increase tonnage. There are plans for a recycling trailer at the Paradise Landfill next year and hopefully a recycling program in Denare Beach.

We will be increasing our promotion of recycling to businesses and have been talking with the City of Flin Flon about dumpster fees.

Comments –  This month we processed more than 40 MT for the first time this year. Last year there were 5 months over 40. The gap between last year and this is decreasing. Cardboard tonnage increased significantly. Hopefully by the end of the year we will have processed at least the same amount as last year - 460 MT.

Comments –  My goal of 500 MT (500,000 kg) for 2016 has officially been laid to rest. I crunched the numbers to see what is happening.

The good news is that co-mingled weights are up by almost 6 MT. This means more households are recycling more. Office paper is also up by 2 MT.

Corrugated cardboard and newspaper are the two categories where we have seen the biggest reduction. Cardboard is down 9 MT and news is down almost 3.

Comments –  June was another month where we recycled less than last year. it was only about one metric ton (MT _ 1000 kg, 2,200 lbs) less, but we are almost a MT behind last year.

We have been very busy since the beginning of July. Hopefully we will catch up with last year.

Total for 2015 (May)  – 174,708 kg
Difference - -103 kg
Batteries - 26 kg

* Co-mingled is unsorted materials sent to Winnipeg for sorting

Comments – This month was a bit of a shocker. The last two years, May has been our biggest month with 43 MT in 2014 and 47.8 MT in 2015. 39 MT this month is our biggest month yet, but so much less than last year that we are actually behind in total tonnage for the end of May! I think my dream of 500 MT in 2016 just died.

The amount of co-mingled materials which is mostly from households was the same as last year. The drop was 3 MT in corrugated cardboard, 3 MT in office paper and 1.5 MT in newspaper. The cardboard and office paper would indicate that it has been a slower month for businesses and institutions which is what I have been hearing from other sources.

Comments –  February is always our slow month. This year seemed no different. When I added up the numbers I was pleasantly surprised that we processed 3.6 metric tons (MT) more than February last year! We are still under 30 MT this month but we continue to see significant increases. When I compared to last year the increases were spread across all the material categories.

2015 Recycling Stats

Multi material recycling – 460.5 metric tons (tonnes)
Cardboard – 49%
Co mingled materials – 25%
Glass – 8%
Newspaper – 6%
Office paper – 9%
Other – 3%

47 tonnes more than last year which is an 11% increase.
Third highest total in our 23 year history.

32 metric tons of ewaste – an increase of 4 tonnes from 2014.
450 kg of batteries.

2015 was a very successful year. The percentages of materials remain about the same which indicates (contrary to previous comments) that both residential and business recycling is increasing.

This year there were 5  months with more than 40 tonnes. May was the highest at 47.8 tonnes. May was the highest month last year with 43 tonnes, the only month over 40 tonnes in 2014.

We are hoping (planning) to break the 500 tonne mark in 2016.

Batteries - 36 kg
E – waste –The trailer shipped in November was 10.3 tonnes.

These weights do not include most of the mountains of materials that have arrived since Christmas. That happens every year. I am hoping for 40 tonnes in January. That would be the first time ever January was over 40 tonnes.

The numbers were a little lower in October but still over 40 tonnes which is great. Crunching the numbers, the increase is still in cardboard and office paper. We need to get the co-mingle numbers up as that would indicate that more homes are recycling.

If you have any ideas about how to do that, please let us know.

Total for 2014 at the end of September 312,419 kg

Comments - I was pleasantly surprised when this month's total was over 40 tonnes again. I have been analyzing where the increases are as it gives clues to who is recycling more.
The biggest increase is cardboard. There had been increases in co-mingled which shows what is happening in households. It has actually flattened as the increase is offset by a decrease in newspaper from last year. Check the post called Picture of Recycling Stats.

I think becoming a recycler is kind of like eating healthier food or exercising regularly. It isn't hard once you get into the habit. But getting into the habit is sometimes the hard part.

If you have 'fallen off the wagon' know that recycling helps by reducing green house gases and what we take from the earth so there will be something left for the next generation.

Work with a friend who recycles to encourage each other. Call the Centre at 204 687 6169 if you need some ideas on how to make it easier.

Make a Difference - Recycle.

We are 19 tonnes more than last year at this time. That is a bigger increase than all of last year. There was 17 tonnes difference between 2013 and 2014.

Comments - Forty-seven tonnes in May! 109 bales! This was an amazing month. I think a lot of people brought the recyclables they had collected all winter. Last year we had more than 40 tonnes in May, the only month all year that was that high.

Our team was able to keep up with baling materials as they come in.

We are seven tonnes ahead of last year.

I am beginning to recognize there are cycles in this business.  Our January numbers are often high because a lot of materials brought in over the holiday season get baled in January. February is always slow with only 26.3 tonnes this year and 27.7 last year. November is slower too. And now I am seeing that May is busy.

It is all good.

Comments - The weekends were busier this month, but we were often caught up during the week, so I did not expect to have 4,682 kg more than last March. Nice surprise. It also confirms that we have improved our processes at the Centre so we are more efficient. It helps having great employees.
