Ever wondered who runs the Recycling Centre? On April 10, at 7:00 at City Hall, you can find out more. It is the Annual General meeting of the Flin Flon & District Environment Council, Inc., the non-profit organization who is responsible.
Many people want to recycle in our community so recycling has become the primary focus of the Flin Flon & District Environment Council, Inc. Many dedicated volunteers and staff, and financial support from Flin Flon, Creighton and the Mb. Stewardship Program have kept the recycling program going. It has recycled more than 5800 metric tons over the years.
The Environment Council grew out the Flin Flon Round Table on the Environment and the Economy in the late 1980’s. By 1992 the group had dwindled to less than 10 members.
They decided to form the Flin Flon & District Environment Committee. Their goal was to encourage people to be environmentally friendly. It incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1995.
The group started paper recycling in November, 1992. It worked outdoors until December 1994. The program expanded to include containers. It became well established in 1996 when equipment was purchased with grants from organizations and the City of Flin Flon. The first paid employee was hired. A building was purchased with an anonymous community person guaranteeing the mortgage.
Recycling has faced many challenges. In 2004 the Environment Council bought a larger building and began providing services at the Flin Flon landfill. The rental income and landfill surplus allowed it to survive when financial realities threatened the Recycling program.
You can be a member of the Environment Council for $5.00 at the meeting. For more information, call 687 6169.
